A practical checklist for reviewing an email PDF packet

A clean-looking PDF can still omit a message or attachment. Use a short, repeatable review before you share or rely on a converted email packet.

1. Compare the source and output counts

Keep the original EML folder or MBOX archive unchanged. Compare the expected count with the inspection result. Check whether the sample was intentionally limited to three messages. A free sample is not a full archive export.

2. Read the dates and order

Review the first and last messages and at least one message in the middle. Look for missing dates, unexpected time offsets and duplicate subjects. Dates come from the supplied message headers; they are not independently verified. Confirm that the output's chosen ordering makes sense for your reading task.

3. Account for every attachment

Use the manifest to distinguish rendered attachment pages, preserved originals and unsupported or failed items. Open representative files that you recognize and trust. Check duplicate filenames rather than assuming that two files with the same name have identical content.

Synthetic before/after check

Input: 5 messages and 3 attachments. A three-message sample may legitimately contain fewer attachments. A full export should account for the whole supported selection, including any attachment it could not render. The manifest explains the difference; the sample count alone cannot.

4. Inspect layout and text

Search for a distinctive sentence in the PDF and copy a short line to confirm that searchable text is present. Check long messages and page breaks. A normalized layout changes typography and positioning; it should preserve supported message content, not promise an exact original HTML facsimile. Unsupported scripts and malformed encodings need review before purchase.

5. Keep a portable record of the work

Download the ZIP and manifest, retain the original archive, and save a MailPacket work file before leaving the browser. Browser storage can be cleared by privacy settings or device cleanup. The work file contains source mail and should not be posted publicly.

6. Use the right standard for your destination

A reading packet is not a digital-signature validation, chain-of-custody service, PDF/A certification or legal-admissibility guarantee. If an institution or recipient specifies a format, compare the actual final file with that published requirement. For evidence or compliance decisions, use an appropriately qualified reviewer.
